Power Tools - A Handyman's Guide

Power tools can make any building project or home repair much easier and save a lot of time. If you are a do-it-yourself advocate or just enjoy projects around the house, investing in some good power tools is a wise decision. With so many tools on the market, there are a few that should be in your collection.

Circular Saws:

These saws are used primarily for cutting wood, but they can be used for cutting other materials as well, such as metal, masonry and plastic. The saw consists of a metal disc with teeth that's held by a base. When the saw is powered, the disc or blade rotates at varying speeds to cut through the selected object or material. Circular saws can be hand- held or table- mounted, and left or right-handed, depending on the side of the blade where the motor sits and which hand the operator uses when holding a saw. The saw base can be adjusted to select the depth and angle of the cut.

Mitre Saws:

This saw is used to make quick, accurate crosscuts or angle cuts, used typically to cut

molding, frames, or wood pieces that need a mitered corner. Mitre saws are fairly small and portable, with blades from 8 to 12 inches long that can be adjusted to different degrees. Good quality saws have blade guards, which automatically retract when the saw is lowered to make a cut and re-cover the blade when the saw is raised. This feature makes this power tool very safe to use. The saw has an attached dust bag that collects the sawdust that builds while the saw is in use.

Angle Grinders:

This is a hand-held tool used for cutting, grinding and polishing and widely used in construction and in emergency rescues. They are common tools used in workshops, service garages and auto body repair shops. There are many different kinds of discs that are used depending on the material and the task: abrasive grinding discs, grinding stones, sanding discs, wheels and polishing pads. There is typically an adjustable guard and a side-handle for two-handed operation. Some angle grinders can also be used as sanders with a sanding disc.

Cordless Drills:

A drill is a tool that is fitted with a tool attachment used for drilling holes in various materials or fastening materials together. When powered, the attachment tool rotates at various speeds while pressed against a material, such as wood. Cordless drills are used in all types of construction, repairs, metalwork and woodworking jobs. These very efficient drills are usually lightweight, hand-held tools that are powered by batteries, either standard or rechargeable. This power tool is one of the most popular and useful tools that is essential to have around.

Best-Kept Secrets To Choosing Quality Hand Tools

It is every homeowner's responsibility and a good amount of common sense to know that having a number of quality hand tools ready for use at home is a must to invest on. However, there are a lot of hand tools available in the market today that it ends up quite confusing and a little hard to choose the ones to have at home.

Considering how hard it is financially these days, it is highly recommended to be smart in going through the options. Here are a couple of life-saving tips when it comes to getting quality hand tools.

1. Steer away from very cheap tools. They might seem like a good deal at first sight because of the lesser amount of money required acquiring them; they are not really the most cost-efficient choice. They are most of the time not of good quality, and to add to that, they do not come with the warranties that are available with the quality tools. in the long run, they are not really worth any of the money spent for them, no matter how small the amount might be.

2. Stick with what is most necessary. It is important to start out by determining what one needs when it comes to the tools that are most useful at home and for any situations. One can buy those tools that are most needed at home and the ones that are used on a regular basis. The common tools like screwdrivers, simple saw and hammers to name a few are really a must have in most households, but tools such as specific types of wrenches as well as power tools can be easily borrowed from a neighbor or friend. They can also be rented in tool rental shops. Since these tools are used once or twice a year only, they should not be on top of one's to-buy list unless there is a lot of extra cash around.

3. Research on the tools' make. The best quality hand tools are the ones made out of top quality steel. Although they are more costly, they offer the best return of investment because of their overall quality. If the budget allows, there are tools that come with an application or two of corrosion resistant finish, making the tools more long-lasting for one to use.

4. Learn a little more about what makes up the usual tool kit. The basic tool kit is composed of drills, saws, hammers, screwdrivers, sanders and a staple gun. Knowing about these tools is really helpful when looking up which ones to buy and which ones to get on some other day when splurging on things do not hurt the budget a lot. When it comes to drills, one can go around looking at different kinds of drills. They are all designed to create halls on wood. There are hand drills, electric drills, cordless drills and breast drills for larger construction activities. For the saws, the most common kinds include the band saws and circular saws. Screwdrivers, on the other hand, come in different sizes and variations for varied purposes.

Knowing about these and some more about quality hand tools make it easy for homeowners young and old. Looking up for more information about the basic tools and what they can do as well as their value in the market today are good ways to start the process of shopping for hand tools to have at home.

Dewalt Tools Review

Dewalt is a very famous brand of power tools and construction product that are known worldwide. The company was founded by a man named Raymond E. Dewalt in 1924. The company grew in popularity partly because of his invention, the radial arm saw.

When most people think of power tools, it is hard for the Dewalt brand not to come to mind, and for good reason.

At the time of this writing, the current Dewalt tools lineup consists of over 200 electric power tools and over 800 accessories. In other words, if there is a job you need done, Dewalt has a tool for the job.

I have found all Dewalt tools that I own to be of very good quality. I am especially fond of their cordless drills. There has not been a time yet that when I needed a tool and picked up a Dewalt that it has failed me yet. If one of my Dewalt tools ever does fail on me, I know that I can find the parts I need to repair my tools fairly easily at a reasonable price.

After browsing the web, I came across a lot of postings made by people who were concerned about the price of Dewalt products. My personal opinion is that the Dewalt tools are worth the price. But, that is just my personal opinion. I am not a contractor and I do not depend on my tools to make a living either. So, as always, your mileage may vary. I can say that I have not had a home project yet that my Dewalt tools couldn't handle.

No matter if you are looking for a new table saw or cordless drill, I recommend you give the Dewalt lineup a look. Just as I always say, do your research and compare reviews and prices on the specific item you are shopping for. This will ensure you are completely satisfied with your purchase and maximized your savings as well.

What To Look For In Quality Woodworking Tools

Many people love woodworking for its ability to help them relax. When beginning, you'll need an array of woodworking tools. However you won't need to spend an arm and a leg to get going. One great way to save is to buy used tools, and then shopping around for deals on tools that will help you start your collection little by little, project by project.

One tool that you'll love having is a quality chisel set. You'll put them to great use. An affordable type is the Rockler chisel. Go ahead and get a few different sizes that you'll need, basically from about ½ inch to 2 inches wide. When you use the chisel you can either use your hand or a wood mallet.

In order keep things sturdy and in place while you glue them together for instance are wood clamps. These will be one of your most useful tools in your collection. The great thing is that they're not that expensive at all, and many times you find them in good condition when you buy them used. As you see them offered cheap, pick them up, you'll thank yourself for it.

Squares are vital for accurate measuring. You'll need a carpenter square or a framing square. A try square is usually used when making furniture. They come in various sizes from 3 to 12 inches. Find squares that are marked in inches and metric. A combination square has two pieces: a head and a steel blade. It's a great tool for measuring forty-five or ninety degree angles.

Next you'll need drills. They come both corded and cordless. Corded drills work better and are less expensive. You'll want to look for drills that include reverse, variable speed controls and attachments for a drill press as added features. If you'd rather have a cordless drill for the freedom to roam, look for high voltage batteries to be sure it will have sufficient power. Find a model with two batteries, therefore one can be charging while you're working with the other. You'll need a variety of bits for your woodworking projects.

Hand planes are constructed of wood or steel and are used for a variety of purposes. You'll use the jackplane for rough shaping. These come in 12 to 15 inch sizes. For trimming you'll need a block plane. Use Smoothing planes for finer cuts - these are about 8 or 9 inches long.

One thought you'd want to consider is that you shouldn't just rush out and buy the cheapest tools that are out there. Be patient and wait for higher quality tools to be discounted. You'll thank yourself down the road when you're grandchildren are using the same tools that you used to create their woodworking masterpieces.

A quality set will still be around for years, unlike cheap tools, which you'll have to replace many times over the same time period.

The Internet is a great place to look for discounts on woodworking tools. As with anything buying the better known brand names that have a good warranty, which with tools can be rather outstanding. You may never have to purchase the same tool ever again through your lifetime if you're smart about your purchase.

Being really interested in machinery and hand tools, Leroy Calstard edited quite some short articles on the topic. Recording his experience in works on woodworking tools and machinery the writer improved his expertise in the area.

A Brief History of DeWalt Power Tools

From the time he was a child Raymond E DeWalt watched and learned from his father the intricacies of woodworking and complex construction. Upon leaving school as an adolescent, he continued to follow this path and earned his keep at mills and construction sites as jobs were available. The young DeWalt though, also learned from his father that a life in mill-work was difficult one, and in order to simplify his own life and to capitalize on both the physical and economical expenses of hard labor, he used the advantages of his youth and experience to continually refine and enhance the machines around him to meet the certain needs and specifications of different jobsites.

DeWalt's ingenuity and expertise in the field were largely and always evident and soon he was offered a position as the head of a major woodworking mill that manufactured nearly everything from the simple six-panel box to the modern, complex home. As fate would have it, DeWalt's mill had more work than it could handle and as the President of the company allowed no budget space for additional labor costs, DeWalt simply had to get more efficient production from the existing force. DeWalt was forced into a jam and emerged with the first working model of what we know today as the radial arm saw.

Designing a yoke which attached directly to a saw and motor, and mounting this mechanism to a standard arm, DeWalt's machine could be raised and lowered, could slide back and forth, and could tilt to any bevel; as a result, DeWalt generated the work of four men with this machine, he reduced production costs, and completely enhanced overall productivity in the process. By 1922, and as Superintendent of Seabrook Farms, DeWalt perfected his radial arm machine and forever altered the woodworking, crafting, and building industries.

Just two years later in 1924 DeWalt formed the DeWalt Products Company and purchased a plant and office building in Leola, Pennsylvania where he marketed the "Wonder-Worker," the electrical, universal woodworking machine he'd developed at Seabrook Farms. In 1929 Dewalt Products Company upgraded their facilities with a new and modern plant and office building in Lancaster, PA where after adding 40,000 square feet of manufacturing space, an 8,400 square foot showroom, and a 16,000 square foot warehouse, they still remain today. In 1947, DeWalt Products Company completely reorganized and reincorporated itself under DeWalt Inc. Later, only further augmenting their enterprise, DeWalt Inc. extended its operations to Canada and acquired the United States and Canadian patent rights to the Bennett Two-Way Panel Saw.

In the spirit of DeWalt's first radial arm saw, 1967 crashed another wave upon the shores of the tooling community as DeWalt introduced the bench grinder and soon followed this introduction with that of intense metal cutting machines for both ferrous and non-ferrous metals. In 1992, DeWalt introduced their first line of portable electric power tools and accessories especially designed for professional commercial and residential workers. In 1994, only two years later, DeWalt broke ground once more with the release of their new cordless power tool system which included over 30 extreme power tools. Among them, a 14.4V cordless drill/driver, which was, at the time, the most powerful cordless tool on the market, and the first ever drill/driver/hammerdrill combination tool. Allowing crafters to work with far greater productivity and to build with a high-performance power tool, the system took construction to a wholly new level.

By 2001 the DeWalt Inc. enterprise included over 200 electric power tools and over 800 accessories to enhance them. Today, after more than nine decades of innovation in the woodworking and power tool industries, DeWalt continues to propel the community to new heights. Accordingly, DeWalt remains one of the most trusted and high-performance brands in the industry.

Comparison of Corded and Cordless Power Tools

There are bountiful numbers of benefits in using cordless modern tools. The technology has improved a lot and paved way to a comfortable working atmosphere. Cordless modern tools come with self powered batteries which are completely dependent on the battery power. Continuous usage will exhaust the battery and you might soon find a replacement or charge it again to run it efficiently. The batteries can be expensive and these machines seem to be little bit heavy.

So what do you say about corded power tools? Is there any advantage in using it? Obviously! These machine tools offer more power and efficiency when compared with cordless tools. They depend on a constant and non-dwindling power source for their operation. There are several tools that come with unmatched experience for the diversified applications. They deliver the highest performance when it comes to heavy duty jobs. These equipments need not be stopped in the midway and works can be finished much earlier. People in construction sites prefer corded tools for this reason. These tools are less expensive and you will never have a chance to replace the expensive battery in it.

Corded modern tools offer better strength, durability and results with unmatched professional experience. However, corded modern tools do not waste your money on expensive batteries. Cordless tools are safe to use on most occasions whereas corded tools have a serious electrical hazard and can easily trip over. These tools have limited portability and experts recommend not using extension cords to be safe on the floor.
