Welding Flux - The Information Article


Welding flux is also known as Flux core welding, is a semi automatic welding process which uses a tubular electrode that creates flux with constant voltage. A flux is a material used to prevent, dissolve or facilitate removal of oxides and other undesirable substances. Overview of Plasma Cutter and Welding


A plasma cutter is a tool that is used in the type of welding called PAW or Plasma Arc Welding. Plasma in this case is actually a gas and it has been ionized by heating it to a high temperature. Plasma at this point is actually able to conduct electricity and it uses a small hole to transfer an electric arc to the piece that the welder is welding.

Plasma is a gas and it automatically happened when you put gas under very high temperatures. Heat actually will create a chemical reaction with the gas and the welder gets a very strong tool that can cut through many things.

Although this may seem mysterious, plasma also is the power within neon signs, plasma displays and even fluorescent lights. All of these things use what is called "cool" plasma and this type is not the type that cuts metal.

The welder will find that plasma cutters come in a variety of sizes and shapes. Some use robotic arms so they can make more precise cuts. Others are handheld units and very compact which are the type that some people use in their home shops.

The way a plasma cutter works is like this; it sends a pressurized gas through a channel that is very small. The gas that it uses could be anything from oxygen to argon. There is an electron in the middle of the channel that is negatively charged. When power is applied to this electrode, and the tip of the nozzle from the plasma cutter is touched onto the metal a circuit is created.

This connection then creates a spark between the metal and the electrode. Finally, the gas is heated by the spark and you get a plasma stream that is directed to the metal, reducing it to a metal slag. After this, you have a piece of metal that has been cut to your specification by a plasma beam.

There are a variety of uses for plasma cutters. Many automobile shops use them to create frames and chassis especially when they want to customize them. You will them in construction companies because they are adaptable to fabricate and cut the very large beams for constructing buildings or to cut large sheets of metals. Some locksmiths will use a plasma cutter to help a customer who has inadvertently locked their keys in their safe.

Although plasma cutters were originally very expensive and only used in large industrial shops, they have become a staple of use for some types of hobbies in home shops. There are metal workers and artists who use them to create interesting looking art. They use the more portable, hand held plasma cutters.

Plasma cutters can be fast or slow to cut the metal, but it will depend more on the thickness of the material as to how quickly it performs the cut. Welding on Mild Steel


Mild steel is defined as any steel that has low carbon in it and about 85% of welding is done using this type of steel. Usually these steels have an AISI series of C-1008 through C-1025. They are the steels that are most often used in construction or industrial fabrication. They are welded through the use of gas, arc or resistance welding.

Mild steels are resilient and they can be bended or twisted or moved into other shapes as they are welded. You can use mild steel sheets or wire to do this type of welding. You can also use it to weld pipes. As an example, you can use mild steel pipes when you want to work within air conditioning or refrigeration. This can also be used for heating when you want a low pressure.

You can also use steel wire or steel sheets to do welding on mild steel. Mild steel can be used in the following types of welding:

Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW)-- this is a type of welding that uses a solid electrode wire that is continuously used as a filler metal. It also uses a shielding gas. The wire that is used is mild steel, and it can be a copper color to protect it from rusting. This will also improve the way that it conducts electricity.

Flux-Cored Arc-Welding -- this type of welding uses a wire that is covered with flux so that it will automatically give you the shielding gas. This is the favored way of doing welding on mild steels in an outdoor environment.

MIG Welding -- this is one of the easier forms of welding and is also a good idea for welding on mild steel in an indoor environment. It is one of the first types of welding that beginners learn how to do and it is a bit more flexible than other types of welding. You can also use it to weld other materials like aluminum, nickel or stainless steel.

There are advantages and disadvantages of welding many different types of wire and it is important to know what you want to do before you start. Here are a few tips as you decide to work with welding on mild steel:

Before you start working with mild steel make sure you clean the surface first. Make sure the clamp that you have on the work is tight so that it is a solid connection for the electricity to flow through it. You will also want to make sure that your steel is free of rust , paint or any other debris. Paint or rust will insulate your steel and you won't get the solid connection.

Many people forget that the welder should be put on a different circuit breaker than other things you are doing, especially when you are working at home. The reason to do this is because you are working with higher heat and it needs more power.

Make sure that the two pieces you want to weld are flush with each other or at lest have a solid joining to prevent any problems with the weld.

Arc Welding Basics


One of the most popular and common types of welding in use today is arc welding. Yet the average layman walking the street has little understanding of this welding process other seeing the blinding light flashing from a construction job site they may walking past at rush hour. Welding is basically just a fusion process for joining metals. The metals are simply melted together by intense heat and fuse as one piece. If done correctly, welding makes the joining of two pieces of metal with the same strength as single solid piece. A welding joint is superior to gluing because through the welding process, the metals are actually melted together instead using the bonding properties of glue to hold them together.

The key concept in welding is a heat source is needed in order to fuse the metal together. There are several methods of welding and arc welding is one of the most popular. The term arc welding comes from the fact that an electrical arc is created to produce intense heat. This arc is formed between the metal being worked on and an electrode connected to the arc welder. The electrode rod is moved along the joint and is melted by the electrical arc. The rod has two purposes. One is to help produce the arc and the other is it makes a filler material as it is melted.

At its heart, arc welding is about creating an electrical circuit. An arc welder needs an electrical power source that produces either AC or DC current. The metal piece you are attempting to weld becomes part of the electrical circuit by attaching a cable from the arc welder to metal. The other hot cable is attached to electrode that the welder is holding. An electrical arc is created between the metal work piece and the electrode when the electrode is held close to the metal. Now there is a complete electrical circuit between the arc welder and the metal. This process creates some pretty amazing temperatures. The tip of the arc can reach temperatures in excess of 6500º F. Now there is enough heat to fuse the metal pieces together and create a strong bond. To ignite the arc, the electrode must be pressed against the metal and then pulled away.

Besides creating heat, the arc produces a very bright light. This light is hazardous to the welder and those around the welding job site. You should not look directly into the arc without proper eye protection. However, the visible light is not the only danger. The arc gives of infrared and ultraviolet light that is invisible to the naked eye. This is why welders wear auto darkening welding helmets. These helmets will automatically darken when the arc is struck to shield the welders eyes from the bright visible and the lens filter is designed to keep out infrared and ultraviolet at all times whether the lens is darkened or not. Welders also put up welding blankets or shields to protect other people in the work area that may not have proper eye protection.

Despite these hazards arc welding is a safe and reliable method for fusing metal together and with some practice anyone can become competent enough for basic welding.

Before analyzing the existing wage structure of people welding jobs or assessing what salary the welding jobs merit, it will be sane to first study the job profile of people who are professional welding operators.

Simply stated, welding is the process of heating and melting metal parts to permanently join them. Is it Worth Planning a Career in Welding?


However one may have selected welding as one's profession for life, one should not dismiss planning as the most important ingredient in building one's advancement.

Why should one plan a career in welding? Because planning in advance is the only way to obtain outstanding results. Essentially it may be true for any career. But in welding, for some reasons, it may be even truer.

A young person may have heard on welding completely by chance or after having performed some search with job orientation agencies. But it is rare and almost impossible that all job openings available to qualified persons be manifest to those just starting to look into the matter.

After having enrolled in a professional course one can reach an elementary stage of performance and find a job, which at a certain time in one's life may be the most important worry to put at rest.

But then, depending on the person and on the job, one could be caught in the trap of thinking that the position reached is on the whole satisfactory. One could even plan to stay there until retirement. Why bother for improvement?

There are serious reasons to take into account. One is job security: as long as one's skill is just minimal, it can be quite easy to find a replacement at the slightest pretext,

like the introduction of robotic or automatic welding or outsourcing abroad of some operations that can make a job superfluous.

Another reason is that gaining improved knowledge and skills permits assuming greater responsibilities that usually command a better pay.

One should know that welding is articulated in a lot of different processes, each with its own methods and tips of the trade, depending on materials and type of construction and that there is constant improvement and progress.

It is true that many operations are done now exactly as they where thirty or sixty years ago. On the other hand new and different ways have been introduced over this time to perform better welds more economically.

Learning and knowing as many processes as one can master is the first step. One should then be able to demonstrate one's practical ability by taking tests and gaining Certifications. These are documents that testify as to one's qualifications to perform satisfactorily certain welding operations. Without proper Certifications it may be impossible to get even job interviews.

It may be difficult to know in advance which of the many certifications offered might provide the best rewards in terms of job advancement and salary at a certain time in a certain place.

It is out of doubt however that the person collecting the maximum number of those documents demonstrates a superior level of preparation such as can be requested for important supervisory positions.

A good welder with a few years of practical experience can become with some further training a good inspector or a good instructor. These capabilities may provide less tiring, easier and better paid jobs.

One should be aware of the fact that a profession likely to be more and more requested in the near future may be that of welding robot technician. This type of work will need a whole new set of expertise not usually associated with welders' skills.

In conclusion, the best advice one could give to a young candidate welder is to read, study and learn as much as possible. The career should be planned in view of acquiring, in a given time frame, a set of Certifications as may appeal to the individual preferences, to build the experience necessary for a rewarding welding occupation.
