Top 10 Tips on Buying a Trampoline

Buying a garden trampoline? Follow these top 10 trampoline buying tips and you will find the right trampoline for you and your children that will give years of fun.

1. If I buy a trampoline, will it get used or ignored?

We find all parents are surprised once they have bought a trampoline just how much use it gets and we hear time and again them saying, "..the trampoline was the best thing we have ever bought for our children - they are on it every day". These are the comments after just a week and also after several years.

2. Should I buy a circular or rectangular trampoline?

Circular trampolines are most common for use in the garden as they are less powerful than the rectangular trampolines which are used by experienced gymnasts. The circular trampolines naturally direct the jumper to the centre of the trampoline mat so making them safer. For most children it would be too dangerous for them to use a rectangular trampoline at home without constant expert supervision for them and their friends.

3. Does size matter?

Make sure you know how much room the trampoline will take up in the garden. Round trampolines sold in the UK have a size measured in feet which refers to the diameter (or overall width from the very outside of the frame, across the centre, to outside of frame the other side). Sizes can range from as small as 6ft up to a whopping 16ft. You will also need to allow approximately 18 inches around the trampoline to allow room for the enclosure net to flex when a user falls against it. The best site in your garden for your new trampoline will ideally be fairly level and free from overhanging cables and branches. 5. How do I choose which supplier to use?

A trampoline package will be large and heavy so most people will not have a car big enough to collect one and take it home from a shop. The majority of trampolines are therefore home delivered by a mail order or internet supplier. You should pick one that specialises in trampolines as they can advise you on choice of trampoline, installation and ongoing product support will be invaluable. 6. What features of the product should I look out for?

Frame - the frame of the trampoline is about the most important part, these are usually made of galvanised steel (a process that coats the metal against rust) and better quality ones will have the galvanised protection both on the inside and outside of the tubing. Frames that are powder-coated might be cheaper but provide much less protection against rust. The weakest part of the frame can be where the circular ring joins the uprights. On most trampolines this is a welded joint but these welds can be of poor quality and even good quality welds may crack in time and render the trampoline useless. Atlantic Trampolines, for example, use a patented T-joint for their trampolines which avoids the need for a weld and the difficulties that can result from this method of construction.

Bounce mat and Spring Padding - the bounce mat needs to be strong and hard wearing. It also needs to be smooth when a jumper falls against it with their bare skin. Better trampolines use a mat made of Permatron Polypropylene which is also UV resistant and will stand up to years of exposure to direct sunlight. The spring padding is also exposed to bright sunlight and the PE material used by many manufacturers will crack after a year or so of use. Atlantic Trampolines, for example, use Polyester on the top surface of their spring padding which provides a much longer life span.

Number of springs - manufacturers will normally state how many springs they use for each size of trampoline they sell. Larger trampolines will have more springs than smaller ones. However, when comparing similar size trampolines from different manufacturers the one with the most springs is not necessarily the best or most powerful. The number of springs needed for the optimum bounce is related to the weight of the user. A large number of springs can make it very hard or impossible for a young child to bounce. If in doubt ask your supplier's advice.

Weight limit - most trampolines will specify a maximum safe weight limit. A weight limit of around 100kg (16 stone) should be ample for most families.

7. What accessories should I consider buying?

Safety enclosure - always pick a trampoline set that includes a safety enclosure. No matter what age the users are, or how careful they are, you can be sure that without one fitted there will be an accidental fall from the trampoline. If an enclosure is not fitted you will also have to allow extra space around the trampoline in case of falls. There are many different designs of safety enclosure on the market. As long as there is good safety padding over the springs then a net that secures on the outside of the trampoline circular frame is ideal. This will maximise the usable space inside and an adventurous somersaulter will not be hindered by a net located inside the springs.

Ladder - a trampoline ladder is essential as it allows easy access for older but especially younger children. They are also less likely to jump off the trampoline and risk an injury. If you have very young children you can stop them accessing the trampoline when you are not present by taking the ladder away. We recommend a ladder that has flat steps rather than tubular steps as these can be uncomfortable for children to use without shoes on. Some suppliers will automatically include a ladder with the trampoline but others will sell it as an extra item.

Weather cover - an all weather trampoline cover goes over the trampoline mat and protects it from leaves and bird droppings. It will usually have a hole in the centre to allow water to pass through.

Anchor Kit - a trampoline anchor kit is essential if you are leaving your trampoline out in the garden all year round. Although the trampoline is a heavy piece of equipment we have seen them lift off the ground, even in small gardens, where they have the potential to get damaged or cause damage to your house and other property. An anchor kit helps keep the trampoline secure to the ground during windy weather.

8. I've seen pictures of trampoline tents, what are they all about?

Special trampoline tents have been designed to sit like a dome on the trampoline and fold down like the roof on a convertible car so the user can bounce or use the tent with ease. Tents can provide a useful all-weather play area for younger children and protect them from strong sunlight. For older children they offer the flexibility to turn the trampoline into a den or space for a sleepover. Whatever reason they are bought for, it means the trampoline can be used in all weathers and at all stages of the year!

9. What about delivery?

When comparing prices of products online, don't forget to check what the delivery charge would be. Some retailers add a fixed delivery price, some charge extra based on the weight of the packages and some even offer free delivery. Delivery of the product to your home will normally be during the working week but some will offer Saturday delivery for an additional payment. The product is heavy and the driver might require assistance. Make sure there is somewhere safe and undercover to store it until you are ready to put the trampoline together.

Teaching power tool safety to children is a critical step of parenthood. Even if your son or daughter shows no interest in heavy-duty woodworking, metalworking, or construction, they will still need to learn how to protect themselves while other people are using power tools. Fortunately the method for teaching safety is simple. Use the five steps below, and you and your child will both share a fine memory.

The first step in teaching power tool safety to children is to practice what you preach. Overview of Plasma Cutter and Welding

A plasma cutter is a tool that is used in the type of welding called PAW or Plasma Arc Welding. Plasma in this case is actually a gas and it has been ionized by heating it to a high temperature. Plasma at this point is actually able to conduct electricity and it uses a small hole to transfer an electric arc to the piece that the welder is welding.

Plasma is a gas and it automatically happened when you put gas under very high temperatures. Heat actually will create a chemical reaction with the gas and the welder gets a very strong tool that can cut through many things.

Although this may seem mysterious, plasma also is the power within neon signs, plasma displays and even fluorescent lights. All of these things use what is called "cool" plasma and this type is not the type that cuts metal.

The welder will find that plasma cutters come in a variety of sizes and shapes. Some use robotic arms so they can make more precise cuts. Others are handheld units and very compact which are the type that some people use in their home shops.

The way a plasma cutter works is like this; it sends a pressurized gas through a channel that is very small. The gas that it uses could be anything from oxygen to argon. There is an electron in the middle of the channel that is negatively charged. When power is applied to this electrode, and the tip of the nozzle from the plasma cutter is touched onto the metal a circuit is created.

This connection then creates a spark between the metal and the electrode. Finally, the gas is heated by the spark and you get a plasma stream that is directed to the metal, reducing it to a metal slag. After this, you have a piece of metal that has been cut to your specification by a plasma beam.

There are a variety of uses for plasma cutters. Many automobile shops use them to create frames and chassis especially when they want to customize them. You will them in construction companies because they are adaptable to fabricate and cut the very large beams for constructing buildings or to cut large sheets of metals. Some locksmiths will use a plasma cutter to help a customer who has inadvertently locked their keys in their safe.

Although plasma cutters were originally very expensive and only used in large industrial shops, they have become a staple of use for some types of hobbies in home shops. Buggy Construction Tips Using Dune Buggy Plans

So you want to tear up the dunes with your own dune buggy but you're not sure whether to buy a complete turn key buggy or use some dune buggy plans to build your own? Well firstly there are a number of issues you need to address before you decide which route to take.

The main factor that people consider when deciding to buy/build a dune buggy is the cost of the project, how much is it going to cost me if i decide to buy one Vs. build one myself? Now i can't give you an accurate figure for each as it will depend on where you live, how much shipping will cost and how much materials cost in your area if you decide to build one. It will also depend on how skilled you are with metal fabrication, welding etc. If you will have to pay for a shop to fabricate the parts you need you will obviously be paying more in the end compared to someone who can do it all themselves in their own garage/workshop.

But most of the time its cheaper (and more fun!) to build a buggy yourself. For most people this is easily achievable in their own garage or workshop as long as you have some basic tools and machinery or you have access to some, you know things like a welder, tube bender, grinder, drill press, you get the picture. I should mention that you can hire these things too if you want to or just take the specialized tasks to your local engineering shop. Usually when you tell the guys what its for they get pretty interested and will want to know more about your project and up giving you a good price!

I highly recommend NOT designing your own dune buggy from scratch unless you know what you are doing and have experience in design. Be warned that if you do it will usually end in disaster and a half finished bundle of steel sitting in your garage. That said the most important factor in dune buggy construction is which plans to use for construction. If you get this wrong or use the cheapest or plans you can find you will regret it in the end as they rarely turn out how you first imagined. Lets face it you are about to invest quite a bit of money and time into building a dune buggy so make sure you choose quality plans from the start.

Most good quality, proven plans will set you back around $100-$200 and will give you good solid information and a step by step procedure to building your buggy. You can get plans for cheaper but usually these are quite basic and you won't get the detail you need to build the buggy properly.

Also make sure the company you are buying the plans from has some kind of support you can call on in case you get stuck and need some advice, this could be as simple as a user form that has members that have constructed their own buggies and are willing to give you advice for free. This is invaluable when building your buggy.

For me personally, building my own dune buggy is one of the most fun and most rewarding projects I have done. From cutting the first piece of steel to firing up the engine for the first time is a fantastic feeling and i definitely recommend to those of you who are considering it.

Welding on Mild Steel

Mild steel is defined as any steel that has low carbon in it and about 85% of welding is done using this type of steel. Usually these steels have an AISI series of C-1008 through C-1025. They are the steels that are most often used in construction or industrial fabrication. They are welded through the use of gas, arc or resistance welding.

Mild steels are resilient and they can be bended or twisted or moved into other shapes as they are welded. You can use mild steel sheets or wire to do this type of welding. You can also use it to weld pipes. As an example, you can use mild steel pipes when you want to work within air conditioning or refrigeration. This can also be used for heating when you want a low pressure.

You can also use steel wire or steel sheets to do welding on mild steel. Mild steel can be used in the following types of welding:

Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW)-- this is a type of welding that uses a solid electrode wire that is continuously used as a filler metal. It also uses a shielding gas. The wire that is used is mild steel, and it can be a copper color to protect it from rusting. This will also improve the way that it conducts electricity.

Flux-Cored Arc-Welding -- this type of welding uses a wire that is covered with flux so that it will automatically give you the shielding gas. This is the favored way of doing welding on mild steels in an outdoor environment.

MIG Welding -- this is one of the easier forms of welding and is also a good idea for welding on mild steel in an indoor environment. It is one of the first types of welding that beginners learn how to do and it is a bit more flexible than other types of welding. You can also use it to weld other materials like aluminum, nickel or stainless steel.

There are advantages and disadvantages of welding many different types of wire and it is important to know what you want to do before you start. Here are a few tips as you decide to work with welding on mild steel:

Before you start working with mild steel make sure you clean the surface first. Make sure the clamp that you have on the work is tight so that it is a solid connection for the electricity to flow through it. You will also want to make sure that your steel is free of rust , paint or any other debris. Paint or rust will insulate your steel and you won't get the solid connection.

Many people forget that the welder should be put on a different circuit breaker than other things you are doing, especially when you are working at home. The reason to do this is because you are working with higher heat and it needs more power.

Make sure that the two pieces you want to weld are flush with each other or at lest have a solid joining to prevent any problems with the weld.

Chemical Storage Tanks - Safety Tips

The explosion on chemical storage tank at Packaging Corporation of America, Tomahawk, Wisconsin, on July 29, 2008, which killed three people, has shown how chemical storage tanks could put hazard into reality.

The above accident did not represent the entire potential hazards associated with the presence of chemical storage tanks in a chemical plant. In addition, the condition become worst when chemical stored in the tanks are flammable, combustible, corrosive or even toxic.

Because chemical storage tanks present in all chemical plants, improvement of their safety is very important. That's why this article is written.

Safety tips that I will tell you in this article are extracted from the US Chemical Safety Board bulletin issued in February 2010 entitled Seven Key Lessons to Prevent Worker Deaths During Hot Work In and Around Tanks, and also from other resources.

1. Chemical storage tanks are made of compatible material that will not react with stored chemical.

2. Be careful when you decide to select tank fabricator or manufacturer. Check their products quality and track record.

3. Always refer to appropriate standards when you are going to go into design phase.

4. Some of tank ruptures were caused by defective welds. Effective monitoring and checking including welding test during tanks fabrication are vital.

5. A safe distance between each tank is provided. It will prevent chain reaction when fire occurs at one tank.

6. There should be at least two level indicators installed on chemical tanks to avoid level instrument failure. It had better to provide level glass or something like that for worker to check manually.

7. Do not forget to ensure there are also temperature indicators installed on the tanks. Decomposition reaction, which releases heat, can be easily detected.

8. Instrument calibration is required to ensure correct reading. Set up regular schedule for it.

9. Venting facilities are installed to accommodate over pressure or vacuum.

10. Check regularly the venting facilities. Make sure that they are not blocked by dirt and work properly.

11. Ovoid overfilling tanks. It can be achieved by a combination of manual monitoring or indicating, high level alarm and automatic shut off system.

12. Thickness and welding check may be necessary in some cases, suppose when contained chemical is a highly corrosive. Refer to applicable standards and experts at the field.

13. When you plan to do hydrostatic pressure test or full water test, consider tanks condition and their lifetime. Pressure standard may be slightly lower than the first hydrostatic test.

14. If possible use alternative methods to avoid hot work in and around the tanks.

15. When hot work will be conducted in tank that contains flammable liquid or suspected to be contain flammable liquid, ensure that all possible entrances or inlets have already been isolated. It is applied not only for the tank itself but all connected piping and surrounding the tank. If necessary, drain out all the flammable liquid from the tank and related piping.

16. Monitor flammable gas and vapor before and during the hot work. Use combustible gas detector.

17. Use written permit before hot work can be started in the storage tank.

18. Ensure that all personnel involved in the hot work are trained well, including contractor workers.
